Review: MacBook Pro 17″

As many of you know, I am the proud owner of a MacBook Pro 17″. I have been using it for about 2 weeks now and I think I have formed my impressions of this wonderful device.

Design

From the tip of the iSight to the bottom of the trackpad, every square inch of this machine is beautiful. The ability to work in near pitch black with an illuminated keyboard and bright display is amazing. Apple has truly made this a dream machine.

Performance

Forget the stats, this thing can fly. Opening Photoshop CS3 or Final Cut Studio in 1 bounce, yes folks, thats one bounce. Tasks like rendering or encoding that used to take a while are achieved quickly with the new MacBook Pro.

High Resolution Display

For the first time ever, Apple offered a high resolution display in the 17″ MacBook Pro. What does this mean? 1920×1200 pixels (2304000 total pixels). If you walk into your local electronics store and look at the HDTVs they are selling, there are two resolutions, 1080i (which is the same as 720p) and 1080p. What they are talking about is the vertical lines in the tv. Computer monitors are always ‘p’ or progressive. This basically mean that all 1920×1080 pixels on a 1080p TV are always in use. In a ‘i’ or interlaced TV the pixels alternate, so you don’t get as high the resolution. The display in the High Resolution 17″ MacBook Pro is 1920×1200 pixels all in progressive. So overall there are more pixels in the 17″ High Res than there are in a 50″ 1080p TV.

Conclusions

Overall I love my New MacBook Pro. From design to speed, everything is perfect. And at just 6.8 lbs, its a full featured mobile computer. I have been able to sit lakeside and edit movies and graphics, or surf the net over a wireless N connection. It is the best Apple Computer I have ever used. I give it a 10/10 and can’t wait to see what Apple comes up with next. Thanks Apple for creating such a wonderful computer.
